Thomas Sullivan Magnum III vyrůstal s otcem mariňákem, který umřel, když mu bylo deset. Thomas pak v 18 letech vstoupil do Námořní Akademie, již dokončil jako důstojník ve třetí generaci. Jednoho dne nedlouho po 33 narozeninách si uvědomil, že o něco přichází a tak opustil námořnictvo a odjel za přáteli na Hawai, kde se stal soukromým detektivem. Tam si jej najmul milionář Robin Masters, aby dohlížel na jeho sídlo na severu ostrova Oahu, zatímco bude Robin jezdit po světě a psát knihy. Sídlo řídí upjatý Brit Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, jenž dříve sloužil v Královské armádě jako major a pochází ze starého šlechtického rodu. Magnum žije v domku pro hosty, řídí Robinovo Ferrari, hádá se s Higginsem a řeší různé případy, jak Robinových hostů, tak starých známých i neznámých za pomoci všech přátel včetně Higginse.(monolog)
